Hey U-Haul! Screw-U!!!

This was one of the most taxing weekends I've had in a while. I swear to god, things just do not come easliy around these parts.

The man was moving into his new condo on the weekend...he had called 2 weeks ago and reserved a 5-ton U-Haul truck to assist in the move. Bright and early Saturday morning, we head off on our way to grab that truck...after driving around for 15 minutes past our scheduled pick up time, we had yet to find the place where the truck was supposed to be waiting.

After 10 minutes of being transferred from this person to that person within the U-Haul world, we find out that they've given us the wrong address for pick up. And the place where we were SUPPOSED to pick it up? Was only 10 minutes from my house...not 30 minutes away. So we trekked BACK to where the truck is awaiting...this is where it starts to get good.

Not only is it parked nearly 2 blocks away (which means we have to walk as we don't want to just leave our vehicle on the side of the road in a sketchy industrial area - mind you, the parking lot of the moving place would not have been much safer from the looks of it), but when we get to the truck, it is covered in snow, which means that it's probably not moved all week. Snowbrush in hand, I start the clean-up while the man tries to start it. (emphasis on "tries")

The truck won't start. After turning it over a half dozen times, it's completely dead. So, back to the office we go, where we're told that it will be at least 2 hours until someone can come and look at it. And tehre are no other available trucks for us to take.

It's now close to 11:00, an hour after we were supposed to have the truck, and an hour before his reserved elevator slot begins. We still have no truck, and no furniture loaded. This is not going well.

After a few quick phone calls, we still can't find a truck, which means I have to borrow one from work. Call the boss, he OK's it, so we drive 25 minutes downtown to pick it up, and then 25 minutes back to my house to start getting loaded up. The best thing about it is...we go from a 5-ton truck to a Yukon with about 7 feet of cargo space. Our trips immediately go from 1 to about 4.

So for the next 5 hours we drive from one side of the city to the other, loading ouches and tables and bookcases...his elevator booking ends at 4:00 pm. At this point in time, we have at LEAST one more load to come....and we haven't even STARTED moving stuff from HIS place yet.

One more load from my place, and when we get back, both elevators are being moved so we have to leave everything in the truck for the next 4 hours. This is starting to get ridiculous. Not to mention that we only had one other person helping us out all day, and he had to leave to go to work at 3:30.

8:00 pm comes, and we have use of the elevator again, so we unload the truck, and then head off to start moving some more. 3 trips later, we're still not done, it's nearly 11:00 pm and we are both dead tired. We haven't eaten since about 2 pm, and we've also missed a friend's birthday party. But we have to get as much as we can done as the elevator is booked again all day tomorrow (7 people taking possession in the same building on the same weekend - not very smart, developer guy).

11:45 pm and we just can't do anymore...exhausted and stressed beyond belief, we manage to grab a snack and both fall asleep on the couch before we even finish eating.

It was a horrible day...Sunday was not much better, but it's nearly all done now, so I guess we can at least be happy for that. I never thought I'd be happy to come to work on a Monday morning, but as long as it means I won't be lifting anything or building furniture, then bring it on!
